Types Of Ants
at least is well supported by larval evidence," even though they had earlier stated that larval characters (or their lack) should not take precedence over adult characters. Some of the better-known varieties are the army ants, driver ants, honeypot ants, weaver ants, leafcutter ants, fire ants, silver ants, and bulldog ants. The Ecitoninae were, until recently included within the Dorylinae, a group now considered to be restricted to the Old World tropics and subtropics (Snelling, 1981b; Gotwald, 1982). The available information on army ant life has been summarized by Gotwald (1982).
As additional evidence they cited Kistner's (1972) conclusion that Neivamyrmex and the Old World Aenictus shared a common ancestry because of the relationship of their associated myrmecophilous staphylinids. Ants live in colonies and a single colony may have over a million ants. These ants are also considered a great delicacy.
The three genera Eciton, Neivamyrmex, and Nomamyrmex should probably all be recombined to form a single genus, Eciton. Leafcutter ants live only within their colony and feed exclusively on fungus. While it is true that these genera are separable by the features cited in the key cited below, the characters are trivial. For more information on army ants please visit Army Ants
Another unique type of ant is the fire ant. Honeypot ants generally have enlarged abdomens. Ants that make their nests in trees by attaching leaves together are known as weaver ants.
All ant colonies are comprised of three types of ants, namely the worker ants, the soldier ants, and the single queen ant.
Although still in the early stages this information is being presented here in the hope that it will prove useful to other workers.
Unlike other ants, these do not have permanent nests. A detailed study of character states in the numerous species of Ecitonini must be made before any substantive conclusion can be reached; such a study is beyond the scope of this paper.
Colonies are nomadic. Army ants are found in South America and driver ants are found in Africa. They usually live in hot, dry places such as Australia, Africa, North America and they can be found in deserts as well. The information presented here is the result of an ongoing revisionary study of the New World Ecitoninae, and should be considered preliminary. We can find them in our backyards, in our homes, and even in our workplaces. These ants come in different sized castes to carry out various functions that are to be performed in the colony.
The value of such evidence is elusive. These ants have a sac of poison that is filled with piperidine alkaloids.

Does anyone know a child friendly ant remide?
I have a 13 month old who gets into everything. I also have a bad ant problem. The ant's arn't in places you would expect to find them. They are getting into our cloths, around my computer, other electrical things and papers. There not around water or food. So I need something that I can spray that will dry so my daughter won't get into it. We have a brick home and I'm guessing they are comming in under the base boards becuase I can't ever find a trail. It almost looks like someone had a contaner of ants and just pored them in the middle of the floor. Please Help!!
Use a sprayer with soapy water (I used liquid Dawn) and apply directly to ants. It will kill them inmediately. You may need to continue spraying until you find the nest where they're coming. This doesn't work with fire ants.
