Tuna Fishing - Catching Yellowfin Tuna Review
Yellowfin tuna is an abundant tropical tuna, found throughout the warmer reaches of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. It is also one of the largest species of tuna, reaching weights greater than three hundred pounds. Like with many other species of tuna, catching yellowfin tuna can be done by trolling and casting bait or lures.

Preferred lures include spreader bars, daisy chains of artificial squid and the basic ballyhoo/sea witch or ballyhoo/feather jig combinations. Also, most tuna lures have a Kona head, which comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Apart from all that, one of the more preferred lures is the Rapala magnum CD 18 or its larger cousin, the CD 26. These deep diving lures consist of a wide fin blade in the head section. Another important consideration when choosing lures for tuna fishing is to choose heavy weighted lures since tuna is found in deeper water than other fish.
Trolling involves creating a flashy presentation of multiple lures trolled in the boat wake while moving along at 7-8 nautical miles per hour. Trolling makes use of feather jigs, small squid imitations, live or fresh dead bait and even hard bodied lures. Outriggers are often used for this form of fishing and where fertile bait grounds exist, the tuna will follow. Another method used by anglers is chumming or drift fishing. Chumming involves introducing a baited hook to yellowfin tuna while the boat is drifting or anchored. Cut pieces of bait are deliberately tossed in the water around the baited hook to attract tuna. In other words, a chum line or a burley trail is started while waiting for the fish to show. Once the fish arrive, the anglers send a baited hook into the trail to temp the fish into biting.
You have to remember, though, that yellowfin tuna are fierce fighters and they can put a strain on your gear no matter how small they are. In fact, yellowfin tuna are one of the most challenging species to catch with a rod and reel.
