Freshwater Fishing Lures -The Categories
If you take a look at todays fishing lures you will notice that there is vast variations to select from also a large number of colors and shapes. They are typically placed into categories prior to how they perform and how they appear. Examples of categories that are available today are spinnerbaits, softbaits, jerkbaits, crankbaits, topwater lures, jigs, spoons and flies.
Live baits are a bit on the side as one need to first catch or buy live bait and fix hook rigs on them. In certain countries its not allowable to use living bait but dead bait are usually very successful towards i.e. pike and musky. Live bait are typically small fish.
Softbaits are baits which are made of soft plastics and are weighted with a jig head. They typically imitates small fish, frogs, mice, long worms and a lot of other shapes. Because they are very supple in consistency they works very well and are rather low-priced due to economical production.
Jerkbaits are basically a type of crankbaits but the angler have to make the movements that triggers fish to bite. You need a stiff rod to work them and they are slim for their length and have some type of lip to drag them downwards.
Topwater angling baits works as their term says on and just beneath the surface of the water. They prompt fierce attacks that makes your adrenaline flowing and they comes in all forms and colors.
Spoons are classic lures and are made of metallic parts that that can be similar to a spoon. They produce wobbly actions and are still effective to the majority fish species and are effortless to work for beginners.
Spinnerbaits has blades that rotates and makes reflections, vibrations and sound in the water triggering predators to bite. Comes in a lot of forms and colors and work well in murky waters. Uncomplicated to work for beginners.
Crankbaits are angling baits that submerge when reeled due to a "lip" that are fasten in approxomately 30 degree angle right below the front. They imitates fish and dive into depths up to 15 feet. They can be both suspending and sinking; suspended crankbaits in shallow water and sinking in deep water are the general rule. Created of clear plastic and wobbles when reeled in. Comes in all dimensions and are mostly imitating little fish. Rapala was the initial creator of these lures.
Jigs are heavy led headed lures using a single hook and have fasten attracting skirts or trailers to its body. They are display baits and have to be worked correctly to look as if live and attractive. Comes in all forms and colors.
Flies are baits that mostly imitates small flies, moth and larvae existing both in the water and an off. They are made of one or more hooks with a tied body of feathers threads and anything that makes it look resembling the bug it is supposed to mimic. Flies can be used to attract most fish and comes in a huge assortment of types.
