What would you put into your bass tackle box starting from scratch?
Well, first and foremost, you need to be able to fish and "know" 3 basic lures that cover the three basic sections of the water column- Top, Middle, and Bottom. If you can fish & cover those 3 area's of the water column well, you'll be on your way to becoming a great Bass fisherman.
(Take it from an 'ole fisherman who has TOO much tackle- Sometimes having too many lure options can adversely affect your fishing! lol)
Here are the three I'd suggest starting with:
1. Top- Spro Frog- A Spro F can go ANYWHERE and won't sink when paused AND a Spook Jr, (or LC Sammy if your rich), are both time-tested winner.
2. Middle- Crankbait- 2 different lures- An LC or Strike King 2.5 AND a "one knock" Rattle-trap type lure of your choosing, (either Cordell/Spot, Spro/Aruku, Rat-L-Trap, Megabass, Etc). A 2.5 hits a depth of around 5-6 FT on 12LB Fluro and a Ra-L-Trap can be fished at any depth because it sinks.
3. Bottom- 1/4-1/2 OZ weedless Jig/Spider Grub combo, (or a Jig/Pig combo of your choosing) AND a weighted, Texas-rigged, 7"-10" Berkley Power Worm. ( Why no Stick-bait rigged Wacky style? Although a Wacky-rigged Senko WILL catch you numbers of fish, they aren't generally considered a "big fish" lure. And they are exceedingly SLOW to fish....which is good and bad..)
Remember, you can win tournaments, (and catch a LOT of fish) with just a handful of lures.
Besides, the hard part of Bass fishing isn't really lure choice, it's finding the fish. Patterning fish is MUCH harder than choosing the perfect lure. Many people bog themselves down with a variety of lures they don't really know how to fish correctly. A guy who knows how to fish ONE lure well will always catch tons of fish, (look at Denny Brauer and KVD!!) If you can master 3 lures in the "Top, Middle, Bottom" water column, you'll ALWAYS do well when you go Bass fishing.
Other important items in a tackle box?
1. Sharp hooks, (Owner, Gamakatsu, Daiichi, Trokar)
2. Fish attractant
3. Fluro leader line.
4. Pliers
5. Scissors
6. Swivels
7. Can of Hormel Vienna sausages, (lol).
