What is the best metal tube/bar/coil to use that can be bent and glows red, producing heat also?
I am making a 'neon' sign, but the writing will be made out of a glowing red tube or bar. I need to know what metal to use for the tube and also the backing. I would like it to double as a heater, and be installed outside. Any advice on any stage of this project would be welcome! I am a rather clueless artist.
You need Nichrome wire. A bar will not get hot enough to glow red, though. A better idea is to make the sign out of fused quartz tube, then put a coil of Nichrome wire inside it. The heated coil will make the quartz red hot.
There are two kinds of Nichrome wire. You want the heater kind, not the resistance kind. Otherwise it will just burn out.
PS Tungsten will burn out as well. You need a metal which will not oxidize.
