Is a bilge pump supposed to run all the time?
I have a Cabin Cruiser boat, and have a bilge pump running on it. Is it supposed to run continuously like while im boating and such?
There are two (2) kinds of bilge pumps.
One works only when turned on with a manual two (2) way switch: "off, on".
The other kind has a "float" switch, and is usually connected to a 3 way switch
at the helm station. The 3 way positions will be: "off, on, automatic".
If enough water accumulates in the bilge, it will raise the "float" switch at the pump
and turn on the bilge pump. This provided of course, that the switch at the helm
station is set to "automatic".
If your bilge pump(s) are running continuously (and none of your on/off switches or mistakenly in the "on" position) then it could be a sign of trouble.
Many boats however simply leak... So, small leaks are generally a fact of life in older boats. Also, when underway, many boats have design faults that create conditions whereby water accumulates in the bilge. Your better boats have "self draining" cockpit areas where the water from spray, or rain simply drains overboard. Other boats, allow this water to drain into the bilge area.
At any rate... you need to remember that it is not the bilge pump that sinks boats - it is water that sinks boats. So, you certainly need to find the source of the water that is causing your bilge pumps to run on a frequent or continuous basis.
FYI... According to the USCG and the Boat Insurance Industry... 4 out of every 5 boats that sink... sink at the dock or in their slips. This is because if the leak is not discovered and fixed... and the boat is left unattended for a few days - the bilge pumps will run down the batteries, and then stop working, and the result of course is a sunken boat.
Good luck,
John
