When using a bluegill for bass fishing I know it works sometimes, however I usually encounter a problem.?
When i send the bluegill out (hooked through the dorsal fin) i can usually see the bass checking it out however the bluegill will immedietly act dead and float on it's side, resulting in the bass to lose interest and swim away. Does anyone know why this is happening or how to prevent it. Also, should i use a bobber or just let the fish go wherever?
How big is the bluegill? All in all, a big bass wants a big bait. A bluegill six to eight inches long will be enough. There are pretty much two ways to fish it.
First one is FLY LINING. A hook tied to your main line with no sinker. Since you're using a pretty big bait, a fairly large hook is needed. A plastic worm hook between a three-ought and five-ought should work. The best place to hook it is through the back above the spine behind the dorsal fin. Piercing the spin will pretty much kill it instantly. Plus it'll swim more naturally this way. Hooking it through the nose is not a good idea... the head of a bluegill will get in the way of the hook. In other words, bluegill has too much head for the hook. And in order to get a good hookset, a fish MUST take it head first.
Second is a basic Carolina rig. Slip a sliding sinker between an ounce and two ounces (pretty much heavy enough to keep the sunfish from dragging it) onto your main line. Tie a barrel swivel big enough to keep the sinker from sliding over it. Tie a leader about sixteen to twenty-two inches long to the other swivel loop and then on goes your three-, four-, or five-ought worm hook. Stick the bluegill either way as you would fly lining it.
Whichever you choose, gently LOB the bait out instead of using a forceful overhead cast.
If you choose to use a bobber, you're going to need a fairly decent sized one as a healthy, lively bluegill will drag a small one under. Your best bet would be using a balloon rig. It's pretty much a float rig, except with a balloon filled halfway with air tied to you your line. As far as fixing your problem, its something you can't really control. The bait is going to do what IT wants.
