Different set of alleles to determine color pattern?
In certain breeds of dogs, two different sets of alleles determine the color pattern. Black color is dominant and red color is recessive; solid color is dominant and white spotting is recessive. A homozygous black-and-white spotted male is crossed with a red-and-white spotted female. What is the probability of them producing a solid black colored puppy?
They're both spotted, which means that they must both have two copies of the spotting allele, because recessive traits will only show when there are no dominant alleles masking their effects. As you get one allele from each parent, the offspring in this case has a 100% chance of getting that recessive allele from both parents (because that's the only variety their parents have), & therefore there is no chance of getting a dominant allele. So there is also no chance of them producing a solid coloured puppy.
[However, by the same reasoning, there is also a 100% chance of the puppy being black.]
