Math Homework help, easy 10 pts.?
Please show work and solutions to the problems:
1---An airplane leaves Los Angeles for Denver at 430MPH. 30 minutes later, a plane from Denver to Los Angeles leaves Denver which is 850 miles from Los Angeles , at the speed of 510MPH. When the two planes meet, how far are they from Denver?
2---Sarah, in her car, traveled 20 MPH faster on the first 150 miles than she did on the remaining 80 miles. The total time of the trip was 4 hours. Find the speed of Sarah's car on the first part of the trip.
3---4 Liters of a 4% solution must be mixed with a 10% solution to get a 6% solution. How many liters of 10% solution are needed?
4---Tim and Bob use metal alloy that is 18.3% copper to make jewelry. How many ounces of a 15% alloy must be mixed with a 24% alloy to form 90 ounces of the desired alloy?
Thanks everyone
2) Let s be the speed in the first part. Then her speed on the second part was s - 20. Speed is distance divided by time, so time is distance over speed. Therefore, the time it took to travel the 150 miles was 150/s, and the time to travel the second part was 80/(s-20). The two times should add up to 4 hours, so:
150/s + 80/(s-20) = 4
Solve this for s (hint: multiply both sides by s(s-20) first to get rid of the fractions).
3) Let L be the number of liters of the 10% solution. 4 liters of a 4% solution has 4(0.04) = 0.16 units of whatever the solute is. Likewise, L liters of the 10% solution will have 0.1L units of the substance. This gives is 4+L liters of a 6% solution, so that's (4+L)(0.6) in the final solution. Adding this up gives
0.16 + 0.1L = (4+L)(0.6)
Solve this for L.
