Please help!! Which SUNY in NY should i go too?
Hey guys, I am completely stressed out about which SUNY schools I should apply too!
I want to major in Communications/Journalism OR Psychology
My GPA is a 3.5
SAT-1350 (Plan on taking it again to improve score)
3 years of extra-curricular activities-highschool plays & musicals and the school paper
I am currently interested in these schools:
Syracuse
Binghamton
Stony Brook
Geneseo
Ithaca
Oneonta
Cortland
If you can, tell me ANY information on any of these schools: dorms, academics, admissions, the people, campuses, financial aid, social life, ANYTHING. Your free to mention other schools that you think I should add onto my list. Thanks so much!
I'm going into my senior year at SUNY Oneonta as a psychology major so I can give you a pretty good description of the school and the program.
Oneonta is a relatively small school. There are about 5,700 undergraduates. The size of Oneonta is one of my favorite things. Because there aren't as many students it is very easy to get one-on-one attention from your professors. Walking, you can basically get to any other building on campus in ten minutes or less. All of the academic buildings are right next to each other in a straight line along campus. The dorms are dining halls kind of surround the academic buildings.
The dorms are pretty average in my opinion. There are some different options for you. There is FYE (First Year Experience) which are dorm buildings exclusively for freshman, regular double rooms, and quads (4 people to a room). I did FYE my first year and it was a great experience to be around a group of people who are in the same boat as you. They are in the process of re-doing the dorms. Next year there will be two brand new, beautiful buildings for freshman. There are also suites on campus but you need to be a sophomore or above to get in. There is also a nice apartment building on campus but upperclassman normally fill it very quickly.
Admission to the school seems to get harder and harder each year. I don't have anything to do with admissions so I can't really offer you too much info. I know there are chats for prospective students and you can also e-mail admissions ANY questions you have: admissions@oneonta.edu.
I've met the best friends and some amazing people. Overall, I think Oneonta is a very friendly campus. Of course there are exceptions to that, but it will be like that wherever you go. Be prepared though, because there isn't much to do in town. There is a lot of cool stuff to do if you know where to look and if you're creative. There are places to go hiking, there is a movie theater, a roller rink, parks, a small mall, Walmart (where everyone does their shopping), and cute little stores and coffee shops along main street. Cooperstown is also a close drive and the baseball hall of fame is there. Albany is about an hour away too if you want a place to do some shopping. Night life is very active at school. CUAC on campus normally has stuff planned on the weekends and there is a movie every weekend that normally isn't in theaters anymore but isn't on DVD yet. Oneonta is a dry campus, so there is no alcohol allowed, regardless of if you're 21 or not. There are tons of house parties for everyone and tons of bars for the 21 and older crowd. Buses go into town about twice an hour and thats how basically everyone gets around. You can't have a car unless you have junior status or have a medical reason.
There are 3 dining halls on campus: Wilsbach, Hulbert, and Mills. There will be one close to you in whichever building you end up in. Hulbert THE ONLY dorm that has a dining hall in it. It a double style building. Mills has a food court upstairs and a little grocery store downstairs. Wilsbach is your basic dining hall.
As for the psychology major, its WONDERFUL. I love the psychology department so much. I went in with my major declared as psychology so I've been taking classes since my first semester there. If you do chose Oneonta and go into psychology, take advantage of EVERY great opportunity they give you. I have been a TA, I'm currently doing research with one of my professors, I've in psychology club and am secretary for it this year. There is also Psi Chi, the psych honors society, and internships once you're in your junior year. The professors are all very nice and very accessible. They all have office hours and go out of their way to help you. My roommate is a mass communications major and she also loves her department.
There are also tons of clubs. If you did plays and musicals at your high school you might want to get involved with Mask and Hammer, which is the theater group on campus. There is a club for everyone to join. Regardless of where you go to college, get involved. Its fun and its a great way to meet new people.
My best friend from high school goes to Stony Brook and she loves it there. Its a very good school but its completely different from Oneonta. Stony Brook is a university and Oneonta is college. Stony brook is probably four or five times the size of Oneonta and their classes sizes are huge. It really all depends on your preference.
