What is the best bait and best time of day to catch bass?
Its been years since I have gone fishing. I have fallen back in love with the sport and I do it for relaxation. I have a retention pond behind my house that is stocked with plenty bluegil, sunfish, catfish, and which i didn't expect bass. I can catch bluegil all day long. The bass is my issue right now. I spent all day fishing I can see the bass shoreline in the seaweed or in dark holes within the seaweed. What is the best time of day to catch bass and the best bait / lure to use. It wasn't until 9 pm at night i caught a 16 inch bass with a night crawler in open water. What would be my best bet to catch one of these bass during the day. I have never really been just a bass fisherman but I am thinking I would like to learn. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
You have plenty of answers so I will just give you some information that may be helpful to you at some point. First the best bait may vary from lake to lake, day to day and year to year. Each fishing situation will call for a different bait. In your case fishing a pond with weeds, I would go a weightless senko worm type of lure or a Zoom trick worm. You cast it out and retrieve it with numerous twitches and pauses of the rod tip.Watch the lure up close in the water to get a handle on what types of movement to impart to it to make it seem alive. When the fish take the lure, let him have a little slack so he can't feel any resistance and then reel the slack in and set the hook by a hard upward motion so it will penetrate the mouth. Another bait for pond fishing is the buzz bait. You cast it out and reel it in rapidly so it runs on top of the water. It works best early and late, or when the day is overcast. Generally speaking the best times to fish is the first few hours after daylight and the last couple of hours before dark, but bass will sometimes feed at different times of the day. Just go when you can go. Sooner or later you will hit the bite just right. Good luck!
