how do i make a single handed backhand slice travel far?
Hey everyone, so I'm pretty much a beginner at tennis. I practiced for a few hours the backhand slice yesterday.... and I got probably 1/5 shots past the net..... except they all turned out to be drop shots. Ie: I'm standing on the baseline hitting slices and if it goes past the net, it drops right after the night like a drop shot. How do I hit a one handed slice backhand so that it travels far.... travels to pretty much the opponent's side of the baseline...
Do i need to use more power or angle the racket differently or what? Sorry.. I know it's kind of vague.... but anyone know why a slice turns into a dropshot?
I sometimes have lots of trouble making the single handed slice travel far into the court. I used to to use it quite a lot before, but now I just realize it's giving the opponent control over the rally simply because it doesn't travel deep enough, so I've given up using it, only for those cheeky drop shots at the net.
Even though I'm definitely not an expert at the one handed slice, my coach has mentioned that drop shots are meant to travel low, spinny, and fast as possible over the net in order to catch the opponent by surprise. He says that one handed backhand slices should only be used when you are in a difficult position on the court, or when you are running hard to hit a shot that is out of place for you reach. In other words, drop shots are used only to stall your opponent and throw them off in order to stall for time when you are under pressure.
If you want to use the backhand slice as a primary weapon for rallies, then I suggest deploying them only when you are under pressure. To slice a backhand properly, play a normal slice as you would, except do not let your arm travel no more lower than your waist. Make the action short and choppy, like when you're about to strike. Lots of people think that swinging your arm all the way around and then slicing the ball is the right way to go, but that just makes the shot travel high over the net, which thus causes the slice to lose its element of surprise, because the opponent would then have more time to react for the ball.
