I went to china town, and bought a stone egg that naturally glows., was wondering what it was made of.?
I went to Chinatown, San Francisco and I bought an egg, presented in a pot of water. It was really cheap, like 3 dollars. It was sortof clear, and when you squeeze it or put in in water, it turned sortof bluish. And when you put it in the light, it turned yellow. I don't remeber, but i think it was called a moonstone egg. But i went online and searched for it, but none of the pictures looked like it. Please help me find out what type of stone it is.
It is probably made of the mineral flouorite, which glows quite strongly under ultraviolet light. It is not harmful or radioactive (but see below).
If it contains phosphorous minerals, it can glow in the dark from phosphorescence; by absorbing natural light , then re-emitting it in the dark (the same way as a watch dial glows in the dark). As you probably have noticed, the glow of a watch dial is quite strong at first, but gradually fades away as the stored energy is used up.
If your stone continues to glow in the dark without diminishing in brightness; then it may indeed contain radiactive salts. The commonest was radium; but this han't been used for years, because of the hazards.
